I work in a level 3 trauma hospital where I have seen more kids affected by violence than I can remember. As the city was dismantling its public school music programs, I had an idea that a guitar would be a better thing to place in the hands of a young person than a handgun. I began working on my skills to become a Suzuki guitar instructor. I took guitar lessons from a master to get my skills in shape for the audition for Suzuki education classes. For a little over a year, I have been teaching guitar, bass and percussion at a school that is based inside one of the highest violent crime neighborhoods in the state – exactly the place I hope to make a difference. Ben received a $300 grant to attend a Suzuki Guitar Book 5 training course at MacPhail Center for Music.
